Moving on up!

Hey all, I finally have managed to play well enough to earn the rating of 7610 in 4-player mode. I've been using more double t-spins (it is VERY inadvisable to attempt triples in 4-player - one banana and say goodbye to your rating!) I just wonder why my stats haven't updated in a week or so reflecting this significant gain??? I worked HARD to get it that high, believe me - I went up and down several times. I almost don't want to play the game for fear of disconnecting in some 4 player game vs 3 4000 players! Maybe I'll put it down a while and play with my wii next Sunday. But the bug will bite me eventually (probably tomorrow...hehe), and I'll play....and I'll loose :)

How do you high raters deal with disconnecting?

What is the deal with disconnections? Play a game or ten, I disconnect. It really is discouraging. I mean, I can usually make my mentally acceptable score of 7300, but then I disconnect in some 4-player game and bam, I'm back in the minors. Oh well, I guess it keeps me sharp...having to build up my score over and over again.I just wonder how the really high rated players handle this?

Ok, first game I play with my 7310 rating...disconnect...I LOVE THIS GAME!!!Post Comment0 Comments
Ok, 1 player is easier

I started playing some 1player recently after a long time of 4-player only. It is so much easier to get a higher score...usually I was around 7000 on 4-player, but now I'm sitting at 7310. I think I'll go play more 4-player though as I find it more fun!Post Comment0 Comments
Do'h!

Well, I was on a roll, and got up to 7300 some, then I misdropped my I-beam. Do'h! 7159 now. Gotta love it.Post Comment0 Comments
ups and downs

Yeah, so the strategy I mentioned last blog entry works well only if the other high ranked guy does the same... I was at 7099, came in 4th due to the high ranked player targeting me, and voila, 6800 some. I guess that isn't as annoying as when I disconnect in a 4 player game against 4000 ranked players...grr! What's more fun is when you have 4 "good" ranked players. You can gain, but you don't risk loosing to the very low guys - plus the games are fun to play :)As far as the ranking goes, I'm pretty happy at 7000 now. I can get up to around 7250 or so then I take a hit usually.
Anyway, I'm now a grad student at The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!). First apartment to myself. Just had my first week of classes + teaching duties, and I don't have as much free time as I did in the summer - but I DO have more free time than when I did working the year before as a teacher.
The Tetris Rap
My Tetris cart is oh so fun,
Be it at home or on the run,
Tetriminos on the brain,
Seem to drive dis guy insane,
Falling Z's, and S's too
I-beams, T-spins to name a few,
Doubles, Triples, back to back,
Send that garbage and lower your stack,
Don't get too high, and fill that gap,
You just heard the tetris rap!

Stick to the system

I was playing online the other day and came across cosmonaut. Great player, and we worked out a system for playing that worked quite well. We were in a 4-player match against two lower rated players. After the first guy was eliminated, we would target the second low ranked player, leaving us to battle it out for the win. This makes sense to me, not only because you aren't pissing the high ranked player off by obliterating his score (having lost to lower ranked players), but because the next game, that player has a higher score in which to leach points from.
Just a thought

Meaningless ramblings of a guy and a game

Tetris, what a way of life...I mean game. I first played tetris on my first console system, the (almost sacred) NES. I remember it being a game that you didn't sit down and try to "beat", in the normal sense of beating games, like smb, contra, or the like. It had a certain attractive quality, something that I usually didn't find in otherwise titled "puzzle" games. Now, I've always been a "gamer" of sorts. I've gone through countless titles on the NES, gameboy, n64, gamecube, and PC. I suppose I got back "into" (I likes me some quotes) tetris in high school, when I was in AP calculus. I was re-introduced to tetris on my TI-83+, through a program known as ion (or a-shell). Ah, the memories. Many a study hall was filled with the sweet bliss of perfectly placing falling tetriminos, or the occasional outbreak of anger with a misdrop.
Enter the DS. I rekindled my love for tetris with the release of tetris DS. Well, ok, I did play tetris a few times against my uncle on my homemade arcade cab (yeah, you heard me...it plays over 5000 some games), but it was hardly a revival. The DS brought me new modes to explore, and a silly "hold your piece" tactic which I at first thought of as lame, but now use it so naturally that I find it odd playing ye 'ole NES pack. The preview window also seems to much to me...takes away from the original game. After playing around with the 1-player game for a while, I felt it time to test my skills on wi-fi. The first couple games, as I recall, were not in my favor, but I quickly caught on to the tactics used to win, I faired alright. At one point I became obsessed with my rating and score, and I managed to pull 7600 out of my *** which I will be the first to admit, I didn't really deserve. I had been playing some guy with a ridiculously high score, but he seemed to be half as good as I was. I won nearly every game and pulled his score way down (yeah, I was happy). I don't know what the deal was, but clearly he wasn't rated correctly (and ironically this put me in the same predicament). So, I held of playing for a while, basking in the top 100 players, when I got the bug to play wifi some more, and was put in my place. Ironically, I met the same durp that I had leached points from before and I made a comeback of sorts. However, that short romp was soon ended, and I dropped down to some 7000, and that's where I belonged.
I played in a tetris tourney, and made it to the semi-finals. After chugging Dr. Pepper, blasting techno music into my ears, permanently damaging my spine from sitting hunched over (ok not really), and training for the tourney against the level 5 cpu, I had it with tetris for a good while.
I took off maybe three months, but recently the bug hit me again, so I decided to break out the DS. I'll be moving and starting graduate school very soon, so I won't be able to play too often, but I hope to see you online!
